Q:What topics are covered?
A:Ac Dec is an academic preparation course that focuses on a given theme such as:
- 2005 “The Renaissance”
- 2006 “ China ”
- 2007 “US Civil War”
- 2008 “Latin America ”
- 2009 “French Revolution"
A:The topics studied are as follows: Economics, social science, science, math, literature, speech, interview, essay, art, and music. Students will achieve a greater understanding of each topic in general and with respect to the given theme of the current year. ch Revolution”
Q:What's Academic Decathlon about?
A:The activities culminate in a regional competition held in February. Of course, if the team qualifies we move on to the state competition in March. It is a prestigious academic tournament worldwide and attracts the finest students while covering a broad spectrum of topics. During the academic year, schools compete nationwide in ten different subject areas that include: language and literature, social science, interview, speech, essay, art, music, science, math, and economics. The competitions have a theme each year which provides a focus for the subject content materials. The subjects themselves are meant to prepare students for topics and issues they will likely be addressing in their academic future.
Q:Is it open enrollment for this course?
A: Yes, the course is open enrollment, however I strongly encourage current freshmen and sophomores to come and see what it's all about. We are looking for students with interest and strengths in at least a few of the topics mentioned.
Q:What level of class is it?
A:AT HHS, the Academic Decathlon is an “Honors Level” Course in which all students receive 5 credit hours. However, during the competition, the students compete on 3 academic levels: the “Varsity” Level for students with a GPA 0-2.99, the “Scholastic” Level for students with a GPA between 3.00-3.49, and the “Honors” Level for students with a GPA of, 3.75 and above.
Q:How can an interested student find out more about this program?
A: It is the responsibility of the parent and student to review the HHS Course Handbook posted on the school website and to familiarize themselves with the course offerings at the school. Q:Why should I take this course? How will it help me?
A: A diversity of subject areas enables students to experience a variety of academic disciplines that are offered in post secondary education. Interview, speech, and essay prepare students for college admissions process. Academic decathlon is highly regarded by the academic community nationwide. Because we are a winning team!
